The Shrewsbury Cops account put out a message on Wednesday saying it would be targeting dangerous cycling in the town centre as part of a Europe-wide campaign to reduce road deaths.

Project Edward aims to make all road users consider their behaviour and wants to achieve one day without a death on any of Europe's roads.

Mr Boardman replied to point out the campaign was not specifically aimed at cyclists and the tweet was later deleted.

The police account then apologised to Mr Boardman, who won gold at the 1992 Olympics, saying the officer who had posted the tweet had been spoken to.
