Woman trapped for an hour after crash with van near Shrewsbury

A woman was cut free from a car by firefighters after being trapped for an hour following a two-vehicle crash near Shrewsbury.

The accident happened on the A448 at Pontesford last night and involved one van and a car.

One woman passenger was released from the car by fire fighters using cutting equipment. Three other people were out of the vehicles by the time the two fire engines reached the scene.

Police and ambulance personnel were also at the scene.

West Midlands Ambulance Service tweeted:

A spokesperson for Shropshire Fire and Rescue said: "At 6.33pm fire control received a call reporting that a road traffic collision had taken place in Pontesford.

"Two fire appliances including the rescue tender were sent to the scene from Minsterley and Shrewsbury. An operations officer was in attendance.

"Crews used cutters and spreaders along with small gear to deal with the incident. Also at the scene were crews from West Midlands Ambulance Service and the Police.

"It was a road traffic collision involving one van and one car. One female casualty was released from the car by fire fighters using cutting equipment. Vehicles were also made safe by fire fighters using small tools.

"Three other people were out of the vehicle prior to arrival of the fire service and were being tended to by personnel from the ambulance service. The incident was dealt with by 7.24pm."

A West Midlands Ambulance Service spokesman added said: "On arrival crews found a silver Ford Fiesta with significant rear end damage. A blue van had front end damage.

"A 27 year old woman who was in the front passenger seat of the car had chest and back injuries. Working with firefighters, it took about an hour to free her. She was taken to Royal Shrewsbury Hospital.

"A man and two children in the car were also assessed but did not need hospital treatment

"The man driving the van had been taken to a nearby property where he too was assessed but also did not need hospital treatment."
