While the animals appeared perfectly happy with their lot, their actions created a headache for specialist firefighters brought in to round them up.

Fire crews from Market Drayton fire station were called to the scene along with specialist animal rescue teams from Wellington fire station.

The cows got loose and into the Shropshire Union Canal main line, which runs through the town. The canal was blocked until they were moved.

Crews were called last night at 6.30pm and spent almost an hour getting the cows out of the water and back to their usual home. None of the cows were injured in the drama.
