Jane Warbuton, aged 69, and her 38-year-old son Dean were both pronounced dead at the scene of the crash on the A49 near Shrewsbury.

The pair, who were from Bucknell, had crashed with a lorry between Bayston Hill and Dorrington at around 10.45am. The driver of the HGV was uninjured.

The A49 was closed for several hours between Dobbies Island, Meole Brace, and Marshbrook, near Church Stretton, while emergency services dealt with the incident.

A West Midlands Ambulance Service spokesman said after the incident: "Crews arrived to find a car that had suffered significant damage in the collision, with a man and woman inside, both in cardiac arrest.

"Bystanders were already carrying out CPR which ambulance staff took over.

"However, despite the best efforts of everyone concerned, it sadly became apparent that nothing could be done to save either patient and they were confirmed dead at the scene.

"The driver of the lorry, a man, was treated for the effects of shock and discharged at scene."

West Mercia Police is still appealing for witnesses and anyone with information should call officers on 101, quoting incident number 0216S of July 1.
