Two fire crews from Market Drayton tackled the fire in Newtown, Market Drayton. Crews used breathing apparatus to enter the kitchen of the home, which had become heavily smoke-logged.

Shropshire fire service's Ian Leigh said: "The fire was caused by a tumble dryer overheating. It caused heavy damage to the kitchen.

"The kitchen door was shut, which prevented a lot of smoke and heat damage to the rest of the property. There was one woman in the property who got out without any injuries. We always advise people to clean the filter out of their tumble dryer and to get regular services."

It was a busy weekend for firefighters, who also attended chimney fires in Ashford Carbonel, near Ludlow; Church Lane, Cheswardine; and in Oteley, Ellesmere.

A microwave oven also caused a small fire in the kitchen of a house in Copthorne Road, Shrewsbury, just after 7pm on Saturday.
