Safety concerns have been raised about the A41 in Ashford, between the Tern Hill Island and Sandford Bends, near Market Drayton, after the accident earlier this week.

Councillor Tim Beckett, mayor of Market Drayton, has now called for traffic calming measures to be installed on the stretch of road. He said: "Sandford Bends is notorious for its windy road and there have been many accidents in that area before, including fatalities.

"That stretch of road is a real concern.

"The latest one, which injured six people, shows more needs to be done."

He added: "The road has recently been resurfaced and I have been told by a few people that the anti-slip hasn't been put back on yet. This needs to be look at.

"When I am driving down the road at 70mph, people are flying past me.

"More needs to be done to slow drivers down. There needs to be more traffic calming measures and police checks."

In this week's crash, between a van and a car, two people were trapped in their car and had to be cut free by firefighters.

In August a man was airlifted to hospital with serious head injuries after a crash involving two cars and a lorry on the same stretch of road.

Four people were injured in the crash involving a silver BMW, another vehicle and the lorry, including the man in his 50s who was airlifted to University Hospital North Staffordshire in Stoke-on-Trent with serious head injuries.
