Police said that they had received a number of calls from members of the public who saw a car going the wrong way on the eastbound carriageway, near Shrewsbury's Preston Island.

A woman had to swerve, causing her vehicle to overturn while trying to avoid the oncoming car near the island by Dobbies Garden Centre.

She was taken to hospital.

Toby Shergold, spokesman for West Mercia Police, said: "The car was being driven west down the eastbound carriageway.

"A car had to swerve to avoid the car and has ended up on its roof.

"The car going the wrong way was a Citroen C3 and was later involved in an accident in Lyth Hill Road in Bayston Hill," he added.

"The driver was a woman in her 70s and she was taken to hospital to be checked over."

No arrests have been made following the incident which happened at about 8pm on Tuesday.

One driver said that she had had her heart in her mouth after seeing the car drive past her.

"It was travelling quite fast and there were quite a few cars on the road at the time.

"It shook us up a little bit," she said.
