Telford rush hour traffic chaos after tractor trailer crash

Huge rush hour queues formed on one of Telford's busiest roads after it was blocked by an overturned trailer which was being towed by a tractor.

The tractor driver, a woman in her 20s, was hurled from the cab in the accident on the A442 Eastern Primary near Stirchley Interchange at about 3pm yesterday. A car also crashed into the trailer after it had overturned.

The driver of the car was treated at the scene but did not need hospital treatment.

The car, trailer, and tractor blocked nearly all of the northbound carriageway towards Telford town centre and caused delays and congestion until nearly 6pm.

Emergency services were called to the scene at about 3pm and found one side of the road completely blocked by the Fendt tractor and Richard Western trailer.

Police closed Stirchley Interchange and diverted traffic up the sliproad and back down onto the other side of the junction.

Inspector Emma Wright, of West Mercia Police, said: "The initial report was that a car had gone into the trailer or tractor and the northbound carriageway was completely blocked.

"The tractor ended up on the central reservation."

Steve Parry, of West Midlands Ambulance Service, said an ambulance, one officer, a paramedic and a fast response car were sent.

Mr Parry said: "The tractor driver, a woman in her 20s, had apparently been ejected from her cab in the crash.

"She suffered minor injuries and was taken for treatment to the Princess Royal Hospital in Telford.

"A man believed to have been driving the car involved was treated at the scene but did not require hospitalisation."
