Horse dies and rider injured in car crash near Telford
Two people were airlifted to hospital with serious injuries today after a collision involving a car and a horse on a country lane near Telford.
A woman riding the horse was knocked unconscious in the accident near Sheriffhales and the horse she was riding was killed. The driver of the car, a man in his 20s, suffered a head injury.
The accident happened at the junction of Damson Lane and Kings Lane in Weston Heath shortly before 10.20am.
Both roads, and Stump Lane, were closed off this afternoon at the junction with the A41.
A West Midlands Ambulance Service spokesman said: "The car driver, a man in his 20s, had a head injury and facial injuries.
"The doctor on board the Midlands Air Ambulance from Cosford anaesthetised him before maintaining his airway and he was flown to the major trauma centre at Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham.
"There was significant damage to the car he had been driving."
The spokesman added: "The horse rider, a woman in her 30s had hand, and wrist injuries. She had also briefly been knocked unconscious.
"She was flown to the University Hospital of North Staffordshire.
"The horse she had been riding died."
A paramedic area support officer in a rapid response vehicle, two ambulance crews and the Midlands Air Ambulances from Cosford and Staffordshire attended the incident, along with the police.
Wes Shutt, officer in charge at Wellington Fire Station, said: "We received the call from the police at around 10.40am and we sent out two crews, from Newport and Wellington, including a rescue tender from Wellington."
Chris Ammonds, spokesman for West Mercia Police, said: "We were called to the incident at 10.25am. A female horse rider and a male car driver were rushed to hospital with what were thought to be serious injuries."
