Sean Butler was still at the scene of the two-vehicle collision when police arrived on January 29, the town's magistrates' court heard.

The 31 year old had been driving a Ford Transit van.

Butler admitted drink-driving in Finger Road, Dawley, when he appeared at court yesterday.

Mrs Jenny Winzor, prosecuting, said an officer could smell alcohol on Butler and he failed a breathalyser test.

Butler, of Field Close, Battlefield, Shrewsbury, was found to have 84 microgrammes of alcohol in 100 millilitres of breath. The legal limit is 35mg.

Mrs Winzor told the court: "Butler accepted the offence. He said that he had been the driver.

"He had the crash and remained at the scene. He said to police that he felt ashamed of what he had done."

Representing himself, Butler told the court: "I apologise wholeheartedly for what I did. I didn't realise how long it took for alcohol to come out of your system."

Along with his 18-month driving ban, Butler was also ordered to pay a £395 fine and £135 costs. He must also pay a £39 victim surcharge.
