The rubbish was found early yesterday morning on a narrow passing point.

Bricks, empty plastic bottles and plastic wire were among the items left under the fence panels. Pieces of plastic had been blown down the road by the wind.

The remains of a shed appeared to be included in the pile of rubbish, with parts of a felt roof visible. The waste forced the closure of the route, on Adeney Road, near Adeney. Police investigating the fly-tipping said a large van or lorry would have been used to transport the waste to the road.

It is thought it was dumped at some point on Sunday night or early on yesterday morning.

Paul Roberts, spokesman for West Mercia Police, said: "Police were called at around 6.15am this morning regarding various fence panels and concrete being on the road surface of Adeney Road, Newport.

"The Highways Agency were informed and the incident was handed over to them."

The waste was the latest to be dumped in Shropshire and comes after the Star revealed how land owned in Telford by Network Rail had been turned into an illegal tip. Thousands of tons of household and industrial waste filled land off the A4169 near Horsehay. Police and the Environment Agency have launched an investigation.
