Telford burglar jailed after spitting at police officer
A man spat in a police officer's face while he was being arrested for a burglary at a house, a court heard.
Steven Ellis, 34, had earlier been discovered by the owner of the property in Woodside, Telford, sitting in the kitchen eating food.
He had been found during a search of the nearby area and had spat at a police officer as he was resisting arrest.
Ellis was jailed for a total of two years and seven months at Shrewsbury Crown Court.
He appeared at court via a video link from prison and pleaded guilty to burglary and assaulting Constable Mark Tomlin last month.
Ellis, of Mallory Drive in Aqueduct, Telford, was said to have numerous previous convictions for burglary and faced a statutory period in custody.
Mr Philip Beardwell, prosecuting, said that just after midnight on October 18 the householder of the home in Lord Murray Drive found Ellis in the kitchen.
Another member of the household arrived and Ellis was told to leave and it was later found a Nintendo games machine and a mobile phone were missing.
Mr Beardwell said police were alerted and during a search of the area found Ellis, who had blood on his hands from an injury caused during the burglary. He said there was a struggle and Ellis, who was eating a bag of crisps at the time, spat at Constable Tomlin hitting him in the face.
Ellis later told police he was drunk and had taken crack cocaine and heroin and could not remember any of the incident.
