Ludlow scam caller posing as policeman

Scam calls are being made to homes in Ludlow by a man falsely claiming to be a policeman.

The phone calls are a variation on a known scam where con men pretend to be police or a similar authority in order to get homeowners to give up personal information such as bank details that they can then use to their advantage.

In the latest Ludlow calls, somebody is attempting to pass themselves off as a "Detective Constable Morgan", according to police.

A spokesman for West Mercia Police's south Shropshire safer neighbourhood team said: "Do not give out any personal details over the phone.

"Calls are being made to the Ludlow area from someone claiming to be with the police. Early reports suggest he is using the name DC Morgan, however this could change.

"If you receive a call from the police and have concerns then please ask for an extension number you can reach them on and hang up. Then call 101 and give the extension number."

Parts of Shropshire were hit by similar calls in January and February.

Typically older people are receiving the calls and in the majority of cases scammers claim they are from the police, saying that the victim's card has been used fraudulently in an attempt to alarm them into unwittingly giving up security and bank details.

Detective Chief Inspector Tim Bower said: "Please continue to warn any elderly or vulnerable friends or relatives about these scams and if you do receive a call like this, hang up and call the police on 101 from a different phone.

"Remember, under no circumstances would the police or banks ask for you PIN, send a courier to collect your card or ask you to transfer money to an secure account."
