Alexander Lock, of no fixed abode, was charged with theft from Tesco's supermarket on Monday.

He admitted the charge and yesterday found himself before the bench at Shrewsbury Magistrates Court.

The court heard that the 20-year-old had gone to the supermarket in Whitchurch Road, Shrewsbury, with another man.

While there, they picked up various items including an electric radio and alcohol, said prosecutor Mrs Sara Beddow.

"The defendant then walked out of the store," she added. "He was captured on CCTV and was seen to discard a pasty. He was arrested and interviewed and he said he was involved in the theft of items." Lock admitted a single charge of theft.

Magistrates also handed him a supervision order for six months.

Miss Emma Lineton, for Lock, said he was a highly educated and intelligent man who had come to have a problem with alcohol.

"He was hungry and he took the pasty to feed himself," she said.
