Shropshire farmer fury over spate of thefts

A Shropshire farmer has claimed he has been repeatedly targeted by thieves who have stolen parts of his Land Rover while it is parked on his own drive – leaving him thousands of pounds out of pocket.

In the latest incident two doors on the vehicle were stolen in the space of half an hour while owner James Knott, from Oldbury Wells in Bridgnorth, popped home to take a shower.

The doors have cost more than £1,300 to replace. Two black replacement doors have now been fitted to the grey 57-plate Land Rover 90, which will now have to be resprayed.

West Mercia Police are appealing for witnesses after the latest theft, which happened between 8.15pm and 8.50pm on March 14.

Mr Knott, who farms in Broseley, said he had been subjected to five thefts in the past three years. He has had a car stolen, as well as parts of his Land Rover including three bonnets, radiator grilles, lights and a spare wheel.

He said he now parks his car away from his home to deter thieves. But he said he had parked outside his home on one occasion last week to pop home for a shower, when his Land Rover was targeted again.

Mr Knott, who also owns the George pub in Oldbury Wells, said: "It makes me sick as it comes to something when you cannot keep your own car on your own drive.

"The first time the car went and never turned up which cost about £5,500, the three bonnets are £500 each and the set of doors will be about £1,300. Together with the other items it runs into thousands.

"I have been told there is a spate of such attacks around Bridgnorth but I think mine must be easy pickings as they seem to keep coming back."

Richard Ewels, spokesman for West Mercia Police, said: "Two doors were removed from the vehicle and an unsuccessful attempt was made to remove the bonnet.

"The vehicle has been targeted previously and the police are investigating. We would appeal for anyone with information to call Bridgnorth police station on 101 or anonymously on Crimestoppers 0800 555 111."
