David Chandler, 45, died following an ammonia leak at the Carlsberg factory in Northampton.

Neighbours near his home in Hillside Avenue, said they believed Mr Chandler was married and had two children and said they were very saddened by the incident.

Mr Chandler was named on Thursday as the man killed following the leak at the factory on November 10.

A post-mortem examination was carried out at Leicester Royal Infirmary and the cause of death was given as inhalation of ammonia.

Though Mr Chandler's family were not believed to be at home, his neighbours said it was "awful".

One woman, who did not wish to be named said: "I think he had a wife or a partner and two children, it is very sad. It is awful."

Emergency services were called to the brewery in Northampton town centre just after lunchtime on November 10 following reports of an industrial accident.

A total of 22 people, including 11 staff, two police officers and nine firefighters were all taken to hospital following the incident.

A 51-year-old man was left in a critical condition following, but is now said to be improving but he remains in hospital.

Police are still on location at the factory and are working with the Health and Safety Executive at the scene of the incident.

Julian Momen, chief executive officer for Carlsberg UK, said: "Our immediate thoughts are with the individual's family, friends and colleagues at this very difficult time and we will support them in every way we can.

"Our further thoughts and support are with our colleagues and members of the emergency services who are being treated in hospital.

"One of our colleagues remains in a serious but stable condition. Nothing is more important to us than the safety of everyone working for us.

"We are working closely with the authorities to investigate how this tragic incident occurred and we will be in a position to say more once a full investigation has been concluded."

A police spokesman said: "Other staff from Carlsberg and emergency service personnel remain at the hospital receiving treatment.

"Northamptonshire Police are working with the Health and Safety Executive to investigate the incident."

The gas leak was confined to the factory site and was not a wider risk to the public.
