It caused major delays on the road, but sparked humorous comments across the internet.

Within hours of the accident, thousands of people online were racking their brains trying to find the ultimate pasta puns.

James Thompson wrote on Facebook: "If it was Alphabetti Spaghetti it would have spelled total disaster."

Local jokers sharing the news said: "I tagliatelle no lies, they had to fetuccini experts, how cannelloni a lorry make such a gloopy mess?"

But it was 'pasta' joke for the hundreds of motorists who were caught up in the rush hour chaos when the road was closed in both directions for several hours and traffic from Shrewsbury had to be diverted around Welshpool to get to Oswestry.

A spokeswoman for West Mercia Police said it was not clear how the pasta had ended up on the road but stressed that no-one was injured and no arrests were made.

A Highways England spokesman said: "We sent people there with high-pressure hoses to clean it up but it does seem that it got everywhere.

"All of it has needed sucking up and taking away."Its been quite a clean-up job."

A spokesman from J&B Bulk Haulage, which owns the lorry, said their vehicle was travelling back to its base at Swindon after collecting the pre-made pasta and tomato sauce from Shropshire.

He said: "It was a waste product destined for anaerobic digestion, to be recycled to generate electricity.

"We feed it into the digester which creates gas which can run engines and generate electricity."
