Letter: Life outside the EU does not feel quite so wonderful now

I have been reading with great interest the letters following Brexit, saying how wonderful it is that Britain has taken back control from the EU tyrants after 40 years of domination and control.

But I'm not quite sure that the specific facts would agree that it has been wonderful for Britain so far:

  • Following the Leave victory, Google received the highest ever search for “what is the EU”, indicating many people didn’t actually know what they were voting for.

  • Polls indicate a far greater proportion of retired people voted to Leave and younger working people voted to Remain.

  • The day after the vote the claims regarding increased NHS funding and controlling immigration, which were the basis of the Leave campaign were immediately withdrawn as “mistakes”.

  • Leaders of the Leave campaign, Bungling Boris and Nigel Farage immediately resigned as it was clear they didn’t expect to actually win the vote and clearly had no idea what to actually do, and were desperate to distance themselves from the damage they have caused the UK, leaving it to someone else to sort out the chaos they had created.

  • The UK political parties on both sides collapsed.

  • The far right racist extremists in the UK and Europe view it as a victory for all fascists and racists, increasing racial tension and violence.

  • Possible split of the UK as Scotland and Northern Ireland seek to keep their EU status, creating further division.

  • The pound has collapsed to its lowest ever level, meaning 90 per cent of what we buy will be considerably more expensive as is purchased from overseas.

  • The Chancellor has been forced to cut corporation tax to 15 per cent to try and encourage businesses to stay in the UK and not relocate to Europe. This is likely to lead to an increase in income tax to fill the void created, meaning most working people will be worse off.

Being free of the EU is not looking very wonderful so far!

However, it is the current working generation and future generations who will suffer and have to work very hard for decades to rectify the mess created and return the UK back to where it was just two weeks ago, without enjoying the prosperity, security and stability of previous generations.

But of course, this will not affect the retired millions who voted to Leave, so they can take back control from the EU – whatever that means?
