A recommended site for Shrewsbury's swimming pool is set to be announced tomorrow and campaigners are expecting Shropshire Council to back a move away from the Quarry.

The long-awaited decision over the preferred site for the town's swimming will be taken at a cabinet meeting on July 13, but a recommendation on a preferred location will be published in a report issued tomorrow.

Bernard Wills, chairman of The Quarry Swimming and Fitness Forum, said he believed the report would recommend closing the Quarry and building a pool at Shrewsbury Sports Village at Sundorne.

He said: "We think it is a foregone conclusion what they will say. Councillor Stuart West was speaking at the weekend and he was basically saying the Quarry is too expensive to run and I would be very surprised if they come out with the preferred choice being anything but Sundorne with the caveat that further investigation will be carried out."

The forum, along with Shrewsbury Business Improvement District and Shrewsbury Town Council, have also been given 12 months to come up with an alternative management and funding plan to keep the Quarry pool open.

However, Mr Wills said it made no sense for the council to make a decision before it could review the alternatives.
