More than 250 riders, some as young as eight, took part in the third Shrewsbury Cycle Grand Prix yesterday.

Spectators and participants enjoyed the warm and sunny weather for this year's event, which featured seven races from under-10/12-year-olds up to the elite men's race.

The town centre course remained unchanged and there was an opportunity from 11am for people to ride around the closed circuit for 45 minutes ahead of the opening race, the under-10 and under-12 boys and girls race, getting under way at noon.

That was followed by a youth race, junior race, 4th category race, women's race and 3rd category race before the elite men's race started at 5pm.

The elite race, which was won by Derby-based Spaniard Albert Torres, attracted a top field of riders drawn from the local, regional and national circuit.

Competitors raced for 60 minutes with the top riders reaching speeds of up to about 40mph.

Shrewsbury-based rider Liam Holohan, who rides for Team Wiggins, was among the starting field of riders.

All races started and finished in The Square and the route took riders along High Street, Shoplatch, St John's Hill, Cross Hill, Swan Hill, College Hill, Princess Street, Milk Street and back to High Street.

Organisers tweeted: "Amazing day had by all. Thanks to all sponsors, organisers, volunteers and cyclists."

The Grand Prix is a British Cycling backed event and a nationally ranked race.
