Some will be aiming to beat a personal best, some will be out to win, and some will be raising laughs by donning fancy dress.

For all, it will be warm, with temperatures set to top 70F as Shropshire enjoys its warmest day of the year so far.

The main race starts at 11am from the playing fields at Grove School and heads towards Asda before looping round Rowan Road, past Pork Farms then left into Smithfield Road to the town centre.

It will then head out along Shrewsbury Road, down to Farcroft Drive, Bentleys Road and Christ Church Lane before heading back to the Grove School where it finishes.

To prevent congestion organisers are asking people to use the park and ride system from 8am at Barbers Auction Market.

Tim Beckett, race director, said: "The main race and children's fun races are a sell out – a phenomenal feat that we are very proud of.

"In just a few short years it has evolved from a small field of a few hundred to what we have now, almost 3,000 runners encompassing all races.

"Market Drayton is a very small Shropshire town with a huge heart.

"This is the largest one day event in town and it is organised by a very small team of volunteers financially supported by sponsorship.

"It is Market Drayton's chance to showcase the town and have an event to remember.

"In addition we offer our event as a platform to runners seeking sponsorship and we intend to donate profit from the event to a variety of local good causes and charities."

Mr Beckett said all 2,500 race numbers have been posted out, 40 exhibitors arranged for the day and thousands of leaflets have been delivered.

He added: "All too soon we will be erecting marquees, setting up barriers and cones, and packing goody bags for all 2,500 runners, 300 young fun runners and 200 volunteer marshals.

"Authorised road closures will be in place for the duration of the race.

"At most this means from 10.45am until 12.30pm but for the majority of the route the barriers will be lifted earlier.

"We will keep inconvenience to a minimum and ask for patience - an event of this size brings lots of people together and safety is of paramount importance."

Entry to Grove School field is free and there will be exhibitors including those selling sports clothing and equipment, medal framing and a variety of refreshments.

There will also be children's fun fair rides, a bouncy castle and children's entertainment.
