Crowds gathered in The Square in Shrewsbury where one of the UK's chain of 1,000 beacons was set alight.

Shrewsbury Brass Band provided entertainment and Lord Lieutenant Sir Algernon Heber-Percy lit the beacon as the sun set on a memorable day.

In Telford, a symbolic beacon was lit at the Southwater complex close to Telford Town Park by Kuldip Sahota, leader of Telford and Wrekin Council, along with Vice Lord Lieutenant Col Edmund Thewles.

Other beacons were lit at the summit of Grinshill, near Wem, in Welshpool outside the town hall and also on the top of Red Bank, and at Willey Park between Broseley and Much Wenlock. Around the south Shropshire border beacons were lit at Clunton and at Brimfield, near Ludlow, with three near Leominster at Croft Birch Common, Docklow and Westhope.

There was also a beacon on Bradnor Hill, Kington, with the permission of Kington Golf Club.
