Plans to build a new cemetery just outside Newport have been submitted.

The application has put together by Newport Town Council and aims to help with burial space in the town for the next 100 years.

If the plans are given full planning permission it would see a patch of land measuring 6.09 acres to become a new town cemetery in Pave Lane, near Chetwynd Aston.

An exact figure for how much the new cemetery will cost the town council is not yet known but is expected to be "several hundred thousand pounds".

Lee Jakeman, clerk to the town council, said: "We are mindful that the current cemetery may not last till the next generation and we are making early plans to ensure burial provisions for future generations.

"In 1859 someone brought the land on Audley Avenue in the town, and that has lasted us for many years.

"Now we are thinking ahead and doing what our forefathers did, by ensuring there is enough land supply for burials for the next 100-years or so.

"We have engaged with local town and parish councils about the design and we are disappointed that we were unable to find land with the town.

"At the moment we cannot say how much the whole project will cost, but it will be about several hundred thousands pounds."

The town council worked with Harrison Design Development to put the plans together, as well as working with the Environment Agency to carry out tests of the land.

The plans were have been received by Telford & Wrekin Council and the town council is asking that full planning is given.

This comes after work to extend the current cemetery in Newport have been completed.

It is estimated that the new extension will provide space for cremated remains and will provide burial space for the next six to 10 years.

The site will formally be opened by the town council in early summer this year.
