Man threatened Telford shop staff with blade during attempted robbery

A man armed with a blade threatened staff  and demanded money at a Telford shop during an attempted robbery.

The incident happened at the Costcutter shop on King Street, Dawley at around 6.45pm yesterday when the man entered the premises and demanded money.

His face was covered and he was carrying a bladed weapon, that he waved at a staff member before attempting to open the counter door.

The door was locked and the man exited the shop without taking anything, and is believed to have made off in the direction of Dawley town centre.

Police officers attended the scene immediately and nobody was injured as a result of this attempted robbery.

DS Dafydd Jones of West Mercia Police said: "This is a nasty offence that thankfully resulted in no injuries on this occasion. Our focus is to trace the offender as quickly as possible as there is a concern that he may commit further offences.

"We urge anyone who may have heard who is responsible or anyone who directly witnessed the incident to contact us and provide information to investigating officers.

"West Mercia Police is committed to protecting the local community and preventing people from harm and we treat all incidents of attempted robbery very seriously."

Anyone who may have witnessed the incident or seen anything suspicious in the area at the time is asked to call police on 101, quoting incident number 576s of April 18.
