Man airlifted to hospital in 'serious condition' after falling ill at Chirk Triathlon

A cyclist was airlifted to hospital after falling ill during a triathlon just over the Shropshire border.

The man, believed to be in his late 60s or early 70s, was taking part in the Chirk Triathlon.

It is believed he fell from his bike after suffering a heart attack.

He was airlifted to Royal Stoke University Hospital after an emergency call shortly after 10am yesterday.

Dylan Lewis, duty control manager for the Welsh Ambulance Service said: "I can confirm we were called to Chirk Street, in Chirk at 10.19am.

"An ambulance and a the Welsh Air Ambulance were in attendance.

"The man was then taken to hospital in a serious condition."

The man is believed to have been among 450 people taking part in the Chirk Triathlon.
