Michael John Healey, 32, from Leominster, died at Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham after he was airlifted from the scene of the crash near Tenbury Wells at about 7am on Thursday.

The female teenage driver of the Daewoo Matiz Mr Healey was a passenger in is in a serious but stable condition.

The accident, between the pink Daewoo Matiz and a white Scania lorry, happened on the A443, a main route into Shropshire from Worcestershire, at Lindridge.

The road was closed in both directions, between the A456 junction in Newnham Bridge and the B4202 junction in Abberley, until about 3pm today following the crash.

Emergency services were called to the scene at about 6.30am, with a fire crew from Cleobury Mortimer sent to help Herefordshire and Worcestershire Fire Service cut casualties from the wreckage.

Jamie Arrowsmith, speaking for West Midlands Ambulance Service, said two ambulances, paramedics and the Warwickshire and Northamptonshire Air Ambulance were sent to the accident.

He said: "Crews arrived to discover a car and lorry that had both suffered front end damage following the collision.

"There were two patients, both still inside the car."

He said Mr Healey was treated for significant chest and head injuries and airlifted to hospital, while the driver of the car, a woman in her teens, was treated for abdominal, pelvic and facial injuries and taken to Worcester Royal Hospital by land ambulance.

However, Mr Healey was later confirmed by police to have died of his injuries, while the woman is said to be in a serious but stable condition.
