When emergency services arrived at the scene of the accident they found the pilot had managed to free himself from the plane and was unhurt.

The light aircraft overturned in Shirlowe, near High Ercall, at about 7am. Crews from Market Drayton, Shrewsbury, Tweedale and Wellington were sent to the field including the foam pod, incident support unit and rescue tender.

There was a small fuel spillage and crews worked to make sure the aircraft was safe. They left the scene shortly before 7.30am.

Police and the ambulance service were also at the scene and an air ambulance was also seen circling the field.

Craig Jackson, watch manager at Wellington fire station, said it was an unusual call out for the crew but added he was glad the pilot was unhurt.

He said: "The pilot was taking off when from the airfield and he didn't quite make the take off and managed to flip over. When we arrived the aircraft was on its roof in the field.

"But the pilot was okay and he was standing next to the aircraft smiling – he really did have a lucky escape.

"There were a lot of emergency services at the scene with about two ambulances there and the air ambulance was circling over head as well. This was an unusual call out for us as we don't get these emergencies very often."
