Up to 70 new jobs could be created if plans for a new shop in Welspool are approved by planning bosses.

Plans have been submitted for a new B&M store, next to the town's Tesco supermarket.

The applicant, Bill Sarre from TJL UK Ltd, said the B&M shop would need 28 full-time employees and 42 part-time employees, as well as the jobs created by another shop once a tenant has been found.

Welshpool Town Council is in favour of the development and there have been no objections from members of the public.

As part of the scheme Powys County Council has recommended that Tesco impose a two-hour parking restriction on its car park because of the increase in traffic expected to be created by the new shops. The restriction would be in line with other supermarkets in the town. Tesco currently has no limit on how long customers can stay in the car park, with many shoppers leaving their cars there to head into the town centre after visiting the supermarket.

Powys County Council will make a decision on the plans at a meeting on Monday. The scheme is being recommended for approval by planning officers.
