A capacity 10,000 crowd will roar on Salop at the Greenhous Meadow tonight.

It will bring the attention of a global television audience running into tens of millions to Shrewsbury. And it will also bring the carrot of a guaranteed £180,000 prize money for the winners – on top of a windfall of £592,000 that the club has already banked by making its way through to the FA Cup fifth round.

Councillor Kenny today urged the Shrewsbury players to take their place in history by beating Manchester United while the world watches on.

He said: "Chances like this do not come along often. People all over the world will be watching Shrewsbury tonight and I am sure that if they stick together and work hard they can do something incredible, like they did against Everton."

Kirsten Henley, of Shrewsbury's Business Improvement District, which represents around 500 of the town's businesses, said that game represents a huge opportunity to throw the spotlight on Shrewsbury.

She said: "Football fan or not, everyone is behind the Town when they play against an institution like Manchester United. It is absolutely brilliant. All eyes will be on the town."

This afternoon the club tweeted:
