The countdown is on for the big match between Shrewsbury Town and Premier League giants Manchester United.

With just four days to go until kick-off the town has gone football crazy, according to the Mayor Miles Kenny.

From flag and scarf sellers on Pride Hill to loyal fans queuing in the rain for tickets at the Greenhous Meadow, it seems that everyone has caught the football bug. And all are hoping that the Shrews can take on the Red Devils and beat them on their home turf.

The fifth round tie will be the first time the Shrews have taken on United in a competitive match. Councillor Kenny said he is confident the Shrews can either win or take United back to Old Trafford for a replay.

"I think that Shrewsbury Town will play their hearts out and will come out triumphant," he said. "I have a feeling they will win anything between 3-2 to 7-0.

"It is really exciting to have Manchester United play in the Greenhous Stadium. It is a really exciting moment.

"Unfortunately I won't be able to attend as I have a prior arrangement but will be catching up on the TV. This is a historical match and Manchester United fans may as well start getting disappointed now as they will be hugely upset on the evening.

"It is not a question of thinking and hoping that we may win – we are going to win.

"If it is not an outright win then it will be a draw. This could be down to Manchester United playing on a different pitch and against a different style of play to what they are used to.

"The Town will definitely have the advantage. A draw could be the best outcome as we would get a proportion of the gate at Old Trafford and have the opportunity to have a replay on their ground. I am really looking forward to it."

Town crier Martin Wood added: "We are going to win, no doubt about it. We have been giant killers before and we will be again. I can see no reason why we can't win."
