Love is in the air – and even Shropshire's most famous son has been getting into the Valentine's swing of things.

Charles Darwin was presented with his own roses to celebrate the day.

The gesture, on his statue at Shrewsbury's library, also coincided with Darwin's birthday. He was 207 on Friday.

The flowers were placed on the statue by members of the Shrewsbury's Business Improvement District.

It was all part of a stunt to try to promote the town as the perfect place for Valentine's weekend.

Kirsten Henly, executive director of the group, said: "Many people love Shrewsbury for all its one-off finds, restaurants, shops and places to visit.

"We think Shrewsbury is a romantic town and many businesses will be looking forward to welcoming people looking to celebrate Valentine's Day for the evening, a day visit or a weekend away."

She urged people to take advantage of the town's romantic spots – including The Quarry and The Dingle – for the day.
