Shropshire speed cameras catch 108mph drivers

Drivers reaching speeds of up to 108mph were caught by cameras on roads in Shropshire over the past year.

The three highest speeds recorded by cameras in the West Mercia Police area – which also covers Telford and Wrekin, Herefordshire and Worcestershire – were all in Shropshire, new figures have revealed.

The highest saw one driver hit 108mph along the A5 from West Felton towards Oswestry where the speed limit is 60mph.

Cameras caught another motorist travelling at the same speed on the A41 from Bletchley, near Market Drayton, towards Whitchurch.

A second driver was caught doing 107mph on the same stretch. The dual carriageway has limit of 70mph – but drivers are advised to drive no faster than 50mph around the sharp bends in the area.

The police force revealed the high speeds after a Freedom of Information request asked for the top five speeds caught by cameras in its policing area since January 2015.

Anna Higgins, spokeswoman for the Safer Roads Partnership in Warwickshire and West Mercia, said: "The speed cameras which recorded the five highest speeds in West Mercia all form part of the Safer Roads Partnership's core enforcement programme, where there is a history of road traffic collisions and casualties.

"Unfortunately a number of motorists still feel breaking the speed limit is acceptable and enforcement activity aims to deter this and improve the safety of the road."

The speeds ranking at fourth and fifth highest in the data were both recorded on a 70mph stretch of the A40 near Ganarew in south Herefordshire. One driver was caught doing 107mph and another 101mph.

But the A41 between Whitchurch and Market Drayton has come under fire. People in Sandford – a village just miles along the A41 from where the high speeds were recorded in Bletchley – have previously called for safety measures to be put in place after biker Anthony Pattison, 53, of Minsterley, died on September 10 at the bend.
