The site of Malinslee Primary School, Matlock Avenue in Dawley, , has been earmarked for 92 homes.

Telford & Wrekin Council's planning committee voted unanimously to delegate powers to officers to pass the plans after a series of conditions have been finalised.

Councillor Nicola Lowery told the committee: "I feel in principle this site should be encouraged for development.

"I do have a few concerns about the amount of development for the site."

She said it was disappointing to see a number of trees would be removed and that there would be no affordable homes.

Councillor Peter Scott said: "It's a disappointment there's no affordable housing but there is a need for rental housing in the borough.

"I think it will add to the economy in Dawley."

The development will consist of a mixture of two and three-bedroom houses.

As part of the scheme, a contribution of £165,916 would also be given towards the creation of an additional classroom at Old Park Primary School, off Brunel Road.

The decision to build the homes was made at a meeting of the planning committee on Wednesday despite an objection from Shropshire Wildlife Trust that the majority of the site is located within the "green network" and claims it would place more pressure on the nearby local nature reserve and wildlife site.

A single objection was also received from a resident who said it will lead to a rise in traffic and parking problems.
