Cyclist airlifted to hospital after collision with car near Newport

A cyclist has been airlifted to hospital with "serious" head injuries after a collision with a car near Newport today.

Police say the man, believed to be in his 70s, has suffered what is believed to be serious head injuries and has been taken by air ambulance to Royal Stoke University Hospital.

The road between Red House in Lilleshall and Edgmond has been closed in both directions by police after the accident in Longford at about 2.45pm.

The police are at the scene, as were the West Midlands Ambulance Service, a paramedic support officer and the air ambulance from RAF Cosford.

Police are warning motorists to avoid the area.

A West Midlands Ambulance Service spokesman said: "Crews arrived to find a cyclist, a man believed to be in his 70s, with a reduced level of consciousness following a collision with a car.

"Following assessment he was treated by medics for a serious head injury and once his condition was stabilised, he was transferred on to the air ambulance which had landed in a nearby field.

"The man was then flown to Royal Stoke University Hospital, which had been alerted to his injuries and imminent arrival.

"Unfortunately, the man's injuries were considered very serious.

"There were four occupants in the car, two adults and two children, all of whom were assessed and discharged at scene."
