Shropshire and Mid Wales trains to be hit again in new strike by Arriva drivers

Rail services in Shropshire and Mid Wales will be hit again next month when drivers on Arriva Trains Wales stage another 24-hour strike in a long-running row over conditions.

Aslef said its members will walk out on February 1, following a strike on January 4 when people were returning to work after the festive break.

A union statement said: "Aslef today announced that, in the light of Arriva Trains Wales' failure to offer a satisfactory resolution to the long and ongoing dispute with its drivers, our members will withdraw their labour for 24 hours on Monday February 1."

The dispute flared last year over pay and conditions, including planned changes to shifts.

The two sides have still not reached any agreement over issues such as the length of shifts.

The company carries around 65,000 passengers every day on over 120 trains across Wales and the border with England.

During the strike on January 4 a usually busy Shrewsbury Railway Station was empty as commuters made alternative travel arrangements.

The station normally handles around 300 trains a day but the industrial action meant only about 20 trains passed through. The Virgin service to London and London Midland services still ran but trains to Manchester, Crewe, Aberystwyth and the Heart of Wales line were cancelled.

Gobowen station was also hit.

At the time Aslef said it was available for talks to resolve the dispute but said there was nothing to discuss.

The pay side of the dispute has been accepted but Aslef claimed the company was trying to "railroad through" changes to terms and conditions.
