Shrewsbury's town centre Subway bids to open until 3am

A sandwich shop's bid to open until 3am will be decided next week – and the move could create up to 10 jobs.

Subway, on Claremont Street in Shrewsbury, has applied to Shropshire Council to open late on Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays.

Jess Sherville, a spokesperson for the shop, said: "All Subway stores are independently owned and operated by franchisees, who are independent business owners.

"Since acquiring the store on Claremont Street in August 2015, the franchisee has also invested in improving the customer experience in store, which includes refreshed shop interiors, reinvestment in new equipment and extending opening hours.

"The increased opening hours will create up to 10 jobs and the licence application includes the provision of door staff to reduce the risk of disturbances and anti-social behaviour in the area."

But the news comes amid plans put forward by a number of bars in the town to extend their own opening hours which have been met by opposition from Shrewsbury Town Council. Councillors have said they want to limit the opening hours of bars and pubs in the town in an effort to combat late-night drinking.

Last month, the council's planning committee wrote to Shropshire Council requesting conditions should be imposed so that "no admission and no alcohol sales are allowed after 2am and premises are closed by 3am".

At a committee meeting, members agreed to ensure they were "developing the night-time economy in strategic locations within the town centre" in a bid to protect other areas of Shrewsbury.

The committee added: "Members feel that approving the extension of opening hours at this location would set an unwanted precedence and could have the potential of expanding those established night-time zones to the detriment of the town centre at large."

The application put forward by Subway will be discussed at a meeting of Shropshire Council's licensing act sub-committee on Wednesday.

In its plans, bosses said

CCTV would be in operation at the premises and the shop would be linked to the local shop and pubwatch system.
