Ryan Andrews, 21, of Cwrt Croesawdy, Newtown, has been ordered to complete a 12-month community order, with 40 hours of community service, after admitting assault occasioning actual bodily harm.

Andrews was sentenced for the offence, which took place on February 24 last year, when he appeared at Shrewsbury Crown Court on Monday.

Adam Western, prosecuting, told the court that Andrews had assaulted his friend, David Owen, at college in Oswestry.

Mr Western told the court that Mr Owen had been giving Andrews a lift to college for the previous few weeks but had decided to stop taking him after he had "behaved poorly" the day before.

Mr Western said that when Andrews saw Mr Owen he lunged at him and punched the left side of his head.

In the ensuing scuffle Mr Owen suffered a 12cm (4.7in) cut to his head, which required stitches, along with an injury to his knee which also required stitches.

Peter Cooper, mitigating, said: "This man was his friend and it is a relief to him that after he behaved so stupidly, he and Mr Owen are friends again."

Andrews was also ordered to pay £120 costs.
