One of Shropshire's major roads will be shut overnight in the first week of the new year.

At least three overnight closures will take place on the A49 between Dobbies roundabout, south of Shrewsbury, and Church Stretton, as a new pedestrian crossing is installed at Bayston Hill.

Work on the pedestrian crossing started before Christmas, but until now the roadworks have been during the day.

From January 4, the entire stretch of the A49 will be closed from 8pm to 6am on three occasions. A diversion will be in place between Shrewsbury and Church Stretton during the closures, and traffic lights will be in place from 9.30am to 4pm during the day, but not during peak rush hour times.

The junction of the A49 with Lower Pulley Lane at Bayston Hill will also be closed during the same times.

A spokesman for Highways England said: "Motorists are unlikely to see workman on site during peak times and that is very much planned so that they do not get in the way. Most of the work will be taking place at night."

The work is to include the widening of the footpath on the northbound carriageway of the A49, new signage, high friction surfacing and the installation and power connection of the crossing itself.

Further south the A49 is scheduled to be shut completely for two 34-hour stretches, to repair damage caused by a lorry to the bridge at Onibury, near Craven Arms.

The Onibury closures are scheduled across to weekends, from 8pm on January 15 to 6am on January 17, and the same hours from January 22 to 24.

All Traffic will be diverted along Corvedale Road at Craven Arms and through Ludlow Racecourse to Bromfield, north of Ludlow.
