Flood alerts for the River Severn in Shropshire, the Upper Severn and River Usk in Powys, as well as for the River Wye in Powys were in place over the weekend.

The Environment Agency (EA) also issued a yellow warning for winds reaching up to 70mph which will remain in place until tomorrow.

Problems began around Shrewsbury yesterday morning after flooding caused disruption on the B5067 Berwick Road.

The area around Gravel Hill Lane saw problems on Sunday and an orange flood alert was in force warning of possible flooding and urging people to be prepared.

Dave Throup, EA manager said: "We've got defences up in Frankwell, Shrewsbury, and they will stay up until we have confidence in the water levels.

"We had about an inch of rain in Wales on Saturday night which has been topping the levels back up again which will work its way down to Shrewsbury by Monday.

"There has been nothing too dramatic though, not like we have seen over the past weeks."

Mr Throup said there would continue to be rainfall and a storm coming in on Wednesday which would need "keeping an eye on" and would top water levels of rivers back up.

In Kidderminster flooding has caused problems around Severn Side South and North in Bewdley.

Traffic built up around the B4190 in Load Street where the flooding had hit.

Meanwhile, on Boxing Day firefighters dealt with a flooding at a home in Croeswylan Crescent in Oswestry at about 8.20am.

One crew from Oswestry isolated the in-coming supply and helped with cleaning up.

They were off the scene by 8.45am.

Elsewhere, the Army has been called in to support efforts to protect parts of Cumbria amid fears of further flooding.

Troops have been helping put out sandbags in preparation and flood defence gates have been closed in Cockermouth, Carlisle and Keswick.

Yesterday, there were 24 severe flood warnings and more than 113 flood warnings in place, mostly in northern England.

Cumbria has seen severe flooding three times this month. Heavy rain is feeding swollen rivers and saturated ground.
