Roadworks in the Ironbridge Gorge that sparked anger among traders have been finished ahead of schedule.

Waterloo Street in Ironbridge reopened yesterday afternoon two days earlier than council bosses had said and a week ahead of schedule.

The reopening came as a relief to business owners, who had claimed that the closure had led to a drop in trade at what was one of the busiest times of the year.

The road was closed for resurfacing on November 23 and was not expected to be opened for three weeks.

A spokesman for Telford & Wrekin Council said: "The road has reopened nine days ahead of schedule. Thanks to our contractor McPhillips for pulling out all the stops to get it finished early."

Diane Rixom, who works at The Gorge Therapy and Training Centre, said: "It's great news for the businesses in Jackfield as people have got so confused over all the diversion signs they have been going round in a loop and giving up. Too many diversion signs with no indication of which ones people were supposed to be following."
