Andrew Tranter, 32, of no fixed address, ransacked the house on September 18 and stole jewellery of sentimental value and cash, including the Christmas money box belonging to the occupants' six-year-old grandson.

Tranter said he had come out of jail to find himself homeless and felt let down by the system. But Judge Tracey Lloyd-Nesling, sitting at Shrewsbury Crown Court yesterday, said Tranter had been given plenty of help in the past.

"You have a truly dreadful record of 37 court appearances for 79 offences including 10 house burglaries," she said. "This was obviously committed to fund your drugs habit."

Mr Gerard Quirke, prosecuting, said Tranter had been released from prison on September 4.

On September 18 he broken into a house, belonging to a retired couple, in Canongate, St Georges while they were out of the property.

He smashed a window to gain entry with police able to use blood found at the scene to get DNA which led them to him.

Mr Quirke said Tranter stole £150 cash and rings bracelets and necklaces worth about £300.

Miss Jabeen Akhtar for Trantor said her client had had a drugs habit for a very long time.

"When released he made an appointment at a homeless project but no-one was there to see him and he did not get support. He feels let down."
