The 50-year-old victim was walking towards a taxi rank in New Street, Wellington, when he noticed a group of four men standing outside B&M Bargains.

Police say he tried to avoid the group but was pushed into a couple heading in the same direction at about 9.30pm on Friday.

The couple then pushed the victim away and he was circled by the group of men.

One man, who is described as Asian, in his 20s, bald and about 5ft 10ins, then threatened him with what is believed to be a glass bottle if he did not hand over his wallet.

He gave him his wallet, which contained his driving licence, a bank card and £20 cash, before hearing an unknown man telling the group to leave him alone.

The victim was unsure whose voice it was but took the opportunity to escape in the direction of Victoria Road.

He was not injured and police recovered his wallet in a bin outside Pizza Plus on New Street.

Officers are keen to speak to anyone who was in the area at the time as well as the couple who the victim was pushed into. They would also like to hear from the man who asked the group to leave the victim alone.
