Drivers on Arriva Trains Wales are to stage a 48-hour strike in a dispute over pay.

The Rail, Maritime and Transport union said the walkout will be held next Thursday and Friday after talks failed to resolve the row.

General secretary Mick Cash said the company remained "reluctant" to table an adequate pay offer, following talks between the two parties.

"The union's executive committee has again considered the matter and recognises the unwillingness of management to resolve this dispute and is extremely dissatisfied by the way the company has acted throughout this dispute," he said.

The union had originally called on its members to strike last month in the dispute over pay, accusing the rail company of "dragging its feet" over the pay dispute.

That was suspended as the union held further talks with the rail operator, but strike action has now been called for next week instead.

Arriva Trains Wales is one of the key operators in Shropshire, providing services into Birmingham, Manchester, Crewe, Chester, Wolverhampton, Cardiff and Aberystwyth.

Its trains criss-cross the county, linking Shrewsbury with Telford, Oswestry, Wem and Ludlow among others.

Gareth Thomas, HR director at Arriva Trains Wales, said: "Progress has been made towards achieving some of the unions' aspirations and we will continue our negotiations this week where we hope that we will reach a satisfactory agreement for all sides."

The company has not yet said how the strike will impact on services.
