Player suffers cuts to face in Shropshire football match assault

A teenage footballer suffered cuts to his face when he was assaulted twice during a football match near Bridgnorth.

West Mercia Police are appealing for witnesses following the incident which happened during a Saturday League match at Severn Centre, Highley, on Saturday, September 19, between 3.30pm and 4.30pm.

West Mercia Police spokesman Terri-Anne Powell said: "he victim, a 19-year-old man, was tackled by a player of the opposing team, causing him to fall to floor. The offender has then proceeded to assault the victim while he was on the ground. As a result of the assault the victim sustained lacerations to his face and was later taken to Princess Royal Hospital.

"As the victim left the pitch, the offender has tried to engage him in conversation. The offender has then proceeded to assault the victim for a second time. Another player separated the two men and both left the pitch."

The offender is described as a white, 22 year-old man of slim build and with short, blond hair.

Police are particularly interested in speaking to anyone at the match who may have witnessed the incident.
