South Shropshire MP and Minister for Defence Procurement Philip Dunne will conduct a turf-cutting ceremony at the site on the edge of Telford.

He will be accompanied by Telford & Wrekin Council leader Kuldip Sahota, Barbara Doornink, managing director of Leidos Europe which will operate the hub, Leidos chief executive Roger Krone and John Hartley, director of storage, distribution & freight at Kuehne + Nagel, which is a key subcontractor on the project.

It will officially mark the start of construction work on the logistics centre which will be home to the Ministry of Defence's non-weaponry equipment supplies.

The investment in the centre is worth approximately £83 million, while £40 million is going into new IT systems to provide logistics services for the UK Armed Forces.

The contract for running the UK's defence logistics operation, which will see around 1,200 staff from across the UK transferred into the operation, was won by Telford in a major coup for the town earlier this year.

In total, the contract to manage the logistics operation is estimated to be worth between £7 billion and £8 billion over the next 13 years – but that figure could rise to £13 billion if the MoD expands the range of products handled under the co-called Logistic Commodities and Services Transformation programme.
