Oliver Atkin, of Betton, near Market Drayton, will be joined by friends Matthew Garthwaite and Chris Molena when they cycle from Land's End to John O'Groats.

The friends, who set off from the tip of Cornwall on October 25 and arrive at their destination in Scotland on October 28, are raising money for Macmillan Cancer Support. Mr Atkin said: "In 2013 my mother Kim heard the three words that for the foreseeable future still strike dread and despair into the recipient, 'you've got cancer'.

"For those who don't know her, being defeated by this was not an option.

"However strong a person may be, the despicable reality of going through cancer treatment requires lots of support. There was never any doubt that support from family and friends would be there due to the magnificent people that surround her.

"I am eternally grateful to Macmillan for providing the kind of support which allowed her to focus her mind on recovery and rehabilitation. Paying back Macmillan for all they did is going to be a lengthy process, so I thought I'd better start with a biggie.
