Shrewsbury Town Council could be set for a temporary move to Shirehall while it continues its search for new premises.

The council is in need of a new base as Shrewsbury's new university is taking over the Guildhall at Frankwell Quay, which is its current home.

Helen Ball, clerk of the council, said that no decision had been made on either temporary or permanent site but that Shirehall at Abbey Foregate – the home of Shropshire Council – could be used as a stop-gap.

She said: "We are looking at various alternatives. Obviously we want a long-term fix but in the short term we could move to Shirehall."

Mrs Ball said that the council's long-term aim would be to secure a town centre premises.

She said: "The town council being in the town centre is a prerequisite. It is a given. The town centre is pretty much equidistant from every ward but it is a case of finding the right building, which can provide what we need."
