Abraham Parkes, 40, of Maes-y-Cain, Llansantffraid, appeared at Welshpool Magistrates Court yesterday where he admitted a charge of drink driving.

Parkes had been drinking pints of lager in the village with a friend who had recently left hospital, when he decided to ride home on his Honda scooter.

But ambulance crews came across him off the bike after it broke down and called the police.

In addition to the disqualification, Parkes was fined £125 and ordered to pay a £150 court charge, a £20 victim surcharge and £85 costs.

Mrs Helen Tench, prosecuting, said Parkes was found at 3.30am and officers were called.

"He was taken to the station and gave a reading of 60 microgrammes of alcohol in 100 millilitres of breath. The legal limit is 35," she said.

"In interview he admitted he had been foolish and asked officers to 'let him off this once'."

Mr Paul Inns, for Parkes, said: "A friend had recently come out of hospital so they went for what was meant to be one drink. But one lead to another and he is sorry and ashamed."
