Christopher Stephen Williams, of Queens Meadow in Wigmore, near Ludlow, pleaded guilty to trying to rape a woman in an alleyway in the town just over the Shropshire border.

He was sentenced at Worcester Crown Court for the offence, which took place in April last year.

Detective Sergeant Mark Jinks, investigating officer for West Mercia Police, said: "I am extremely pleased with the result.

"This was a heinous crime against a young girl who was simply walking home.

"She has displayed enormous courage in providing evidence that has helped secure this conviction against a dangerous sex offender.

"West Mercia Police is committed to tackling sexual crime and minimising the risk of harm to everyone."

Williams was sentenced on Friday.
