Shropshire Council today said it is continuing to discuss plans for the former Westlands Care Home in Wem with interested parties.

In March, the Westlands Care home was closed by managers at Coverage Care Services. It was revealed that Westlands had lost £25,000 a year for the last five years.

On announcing the possible closure in February, more than 50 staff and more than 30 long-term residents faced relocation. Launching a petition to save the home, concerned relatives said they feared it would cause elderly residents to become 'distressed, fearful and anxious' and said they were being 'evicted out of their last home'.

Following closure, one of the options raised for the site was that it could be turned into sheltered accommodation.

Mike Owen, Shropshire Council cabinet member for resources, finance and support said: "Shropshire Council is continuing to discuss plans for the site with interested parties. An announcement is likely within the next fortnight."
